As I remember, the comments on the news about her not being deserving of the attack were from a stranger, who would not have known about her character.

Of course I wish her well for a full recovery. However, the point I was trying to make (maybe not as eloquently as I might) has been highlighted by your comment. ‘Nobody deserves to be attacked but if anybody didn’t deserve it it was this woman’ seems like a conflict to me, the latter clause putting in doubt the feeling behind the latter.
