Document formatting annoyances

Two things annoy me about the formatting of Word documents, one of which has no impact on printed documents, the other of which occasionally has a tiny impact.

The first is when there is blank space at the end of a paragraph, perhaps where someone has deleted the last sentence and not bothered deleting the space separating it from the previous one.

The second is where spaces or punctuation marks are formatted incorrectly as either bold or italics. For instance, the spaces immediately before and after an italicised section should not themselves be italicised; the space after the colon of a bolded bullet introduction for which the subsequent text is not bolded should itself be bolded (as it forms part of the introductory text).

If a sentence ends in italicised text, then the full-stop at the end should have regular formatting; if the entire sentence is italicised, then the full-stop should also be italicised.

I think you have too much time on your hands.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much Word annoys me.

So I won’t – surfice to say that if the above is the only gripe you have then count yourself fortunate!

When I was at Uni my final year project was documented using Framemaker on a Sun workstation. Remember how long ago that was? And this product completely kicked ass, never crashed and produced perfect results.

Seems this is now an Adobe product, why oh why are we all struggling with Micro$hite products in the office when far superior ones have been around for eons? Marketeers and stupid managers?

Where do I complain about Blogs that add no value to human existence?
