Who’s on first?

My recent post about my struggle to keep up with technology reminds me of a promise I made to myself in my teens that I would always ensure I knew what constituted the Top 40—the hit parade, if you will.

The top ten artists current read as follows:

1. Calvin Harris
2. La Roux
3. Lady Gaga
4. AR Rahman Ft Pussycat Dolls
5. Ciara Ft Justin Timberlake
6. Beyoncé
7. Noisettes
8. Eminem
9. Metro Station
10. Lily Allen

I couldn’t have safely confirmed any of these to be in the top ten, although I’m surprised to learn that I’ve heard of 6.0 (Calvin Harris, Lady Gaga, the Pussycat Dolls, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Eminem, Lily Allen).

As such, I broke my promise.  Maybe the same trend will become true of technology.

Unless I’m going mad, you’ve recognised 7 (or 7.0 as you might say) of them. Well done. I’d never heard of Calvin Harris, but I have teenagers now to do that sort of thing for me.

My tipping point was the arrival of the DVD player. At that point, I became my father. Not only could I not wire it all together (had to call in one of the kids) but I then became phobic about the remote controller. In fact I refused to distinguish from the nest of controllers it lives in. I still have to “get someone else” to put films on. I knew it was happening then, despite all my previous tech abilities. O tempora, O mores.

I was reasonably OK knowing who most of that lot were (though I wouldn’t have actually known they were in the charts *now* – partly that’s because in an age-defying way I thought the Calvin Harris song was out ages ago – it’s certainly been around for a while…).

I didn’t know Metro Station, and just narrowly avoided listening to them after going to their (horrible) website and realised I wouldn’t like them.

Full disclosure – no idea who Ciara and AR Rahman are though…

The 6.0 was to allow for the two halves. I knew (of) the Pussycat Dolls but not AR Rahman; and Timberlake I’m aware of, but not Ciara.

For the record, I have no idea what the Top 10 songs are. Only a matter of time before I know neither the songs nor the artists.
